Omega Dr. Carter G. Woodson Academy
The Omega Dr. Carter G. Woodson Academy, coordinated by the Iota Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in partnership with the Iota Phi Foundation, is a transformative educational program dedicated to empowering Black youth through culturally relevant learning experiences. Named in honor of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” the Academy provides students in grades 6-8 with an immersive curriculum rooted in African American history, culture, and social awareness.
Held over four to six Saturdays at Anderson Manor, Iota Phi’s Community Center in Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood, the Academy explores new themes each year, engaging students in topics such as the Great Migration, the social construction of race, and Afro-Futuristic art. The program integrates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education while also introducing students to skilled trades like carpentry, electricity, and plumbing—offering hands-on learning experiences and exposure to high-demand career pathways.
A defining feature of the Academy is its all-Black male teaching team, a rarity in education, with Black men making up only 2% of teachers nationwide. This mentorship-driven approach allows students to learn from accomplished educators and professionals who serve as role models, fostering academic excellence, leadership, and self-confidence. The curriculum is designed to be interactive and engaging, incorporating artistic expression, critical thinking, and hands-on activities to keep students inspired.
Beyond academics, the Academy encourages personal growth and community engagement through service projects, interactions with successful Black professionals, and leadership development. Over the past ten years, the program has grown significantly, has impacted nearly 250 students to date. By creating a safe, inspiring, and empowering space for learning, the Carter G. Woodson Academy continues to uplift and prepare the next generation of leaders.
